Families in Growth: In-home parental education to strengthen caregiving, development, and family stability

Some preschool children with disabilities in Israel grow up in homes that struggle to meet their basic developmental and emotional needs. For parents, discovering that their child has a disability can be overwhelming on its own, bringing fear, uncertainty, and the challenge of navigating complex care requirements. When these demands combine with poverty, instability, neglect, or unsafe living conditions, families can quickly become overwhelmed. If these risks go unaddressed, social services may intervene, and children can face removal from their homes and placement in foster care. Chimes Israel created the Families in Growth program to prevent that outcome.

Meeting families where they are

Families in Growth focuses on families already identified as at risk. The program sends professional teams directly into the family living space to improve parenting skills, daily routines, and the physical home environment.

Therapists and parent coaches teach parents how to respond to their child’s developmental and behavioral needs, establish healthy routines, and create a safe, nurturing setting. The team helps parents understand how their actions and surroundings affect their child’s well-being and development. These changes reduce risk factors that would otherwise trigger social services intervention.

Real impact for real families

The program reinforces the therapies children receive at Chimes Israel’s early childhood centers. Parents learn how to continue occupational, physical, and speech therapy strategies at home. Families receive practical tools, equipment, and game kits so progress continues between visits and after the program ends.

Parents report stronger bonds with their children, safer home environments, and greater confidence in their ability to provide care. One therapist described how parents began to understand how their behavior affected the entire household, leading to lasting change. A mother from Holon shared that the program transformed her family dynamics and helped her husband actively engage with their son for the first time.

National recognition

The Ministry of Health has recognized Families in Growth as a groundbreaking early intervention model in Israel, highlighting its success in combining therapy, parental education, and child protection within the home.

Families in Growth shows that early, targeted in-home support strengthens families and creates the conditions children with disabilities need to grow, develop, and thrive.
