Promoting Independent Living with Dignity and Purpose
People with intellectual and developmental disabilities now live longer than ever before. Advances in healthcare and the move away from institutionalization allow many adults with cognitive disabilities, including those with Down syndrome, to live into their 60s and 70s. This progress deserves celebration, but it also brings new challenges that demand focused support.
As adults with cognitive disabilities age, they face increased risk of early functional decline, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. By age 40, most individuals with Down syndrome show Alzheimer’s-like brain changes, while others experience premature aging due to genetics, long-term medication use, lifestyle factors, and social isolation. Many lack information about aging and feel unprepared for physical, emotional, and social changes. Without early education and ongoing support, their independence can decline rapidly.
Living Well, Aging Well
Chimes Israel addresses this urgent need through its Health & Wellness Education Program for older adults with cognitive disabilities. The program strengthens daily life skills, promotes physical and emotional health, and helps participants age with dignity, confidence, and purpose. Our goal is simple and powerful: slow decline while preserving independence and quality of life.
Program Structure
We designed the program for adults over 50 who participate in our employment centers in Kfar Saba, Rosh HaAyin, and Tayibe. A multidisciplinary professional team leads interactive, behavior-focused workshops and experiential activities twice each month. Participants build practical skills that support cognitive health, physical strength, emotional resilience, and social connection.
What Participants Learn
Through hands-on learning, participants strengthen daily living and home-management skills, improve health awareness, and develop routines that support long-term well-being. They learn about nutrition through guided cooking workshops, engage in regular physical activity, and practice personal hygiene and safety habits. The program also builds digital skills that support independence and connection, while addressing emotional well-being through cultural outings, open discussion, creative expression, and meaningful community experiences.
Why This Matters
This program does more than improve health. It affirms dignity, builds confidence, and restores a sense of control as participants age. Participants show measurable improvements in self-care, independence, emotional expression, and social engagement. Many take pride in new skills and stronger connections with peers and staff.
“I’ve learned to make myself meals, talk about my feelings, and use the internet to see my friends. I feel proud of myself.” Kfar Saba Center participant
